A potter for over 25 years, I balance my time between creating my own work and teaching ceramics in the studio. I also present workshops on glazing and thrown altered pots to pottery guilds in Ontario. What is important to me in my work is the feeling a piece of pottery expresses, through its form, color and energy. Working with contrasting elements controlled vs. altered in my forms I strive to create pieces that have a sense of vitality, aliveness and beauty glazed with colours reflecting my new environment. My first introduction to clay was at six years of age during the annual ‘Festival of the Arts’ held in my small community Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia during the 1960’s. Finally, switching career directions in 1983 I acted upon my love for clay. I have been actively involved in the craft community volunteering for both The Ottawa Guild of Potters and FUSION: the Ontario Clay and Glass Association serving as President on both boards. In 2008 I was presented with the prestigious Ontario Craft Council’s lifetime achievement ‘John Mather Award’ in recognition of my contribution and support of craft in Ontario. Similar to life working in clay is a constant evolution. I am entering a new phase with exciting possibilities a new community, a beautiful new studio and gas kiln. |
